Sandra Kovacs elected President, Vancouver Bar Association
Harper Grey LLP Lawyers:
Sandra Kovacs
Harper Grey LLP is pleased to announce that Sandra Kovacs has been elected President of the Vancouver Bar Association (VBA) for 2011.
Ms. Kovacs served as Vice President of the VBA in 2010 and has served on its executive since 2008. She is one of the youngest lawyers to have been elected president of the association.
Founded in 1892, the VBA serves as the primary professional organization for lawyers in Vancouver. The VBA's mandate is to advance and protect the interest of the members of the legal profession residing or practicing in the County of Vancouver; to uphold the honour and dignity of the profession of the law; to encourage a high standard of legal education, training and ethics; to cooperate with the Law Society of British Columbia and with the Benchers; to foster harmonious relations among its members; and to support its members in their relations with the judiciary. Each year, the VBA makes significant charitable contributions, is invited to speak at judicial welcoming ceremonies, formulates and administers the articling and summer student guidelines, and hosts a variety of networking events on its own or in tandem with other legal organizations. It also publishes The Advocate, a respected legal journal distributed to lawyers in British Columbia and throughout Canada.
Ms. Kovacs is an associate at Harper Grey LLP where she has a busy aviation, medical defence and insurance law practice. The firm has a long history of leadership in the legal community. Many of our lawyers (some of whom now sit on the British Columbia Supreme Court and British Columbia Court of Appeal) have served in executive positions for the VBA, Canadian Bar Association, the Advocates Society and the Law Society of British Columbia. Almost 20 per cent of our partners teach at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law, and more than six have been appointed Queen's Counsel, an honour that recognizes a lawyers' skill and dedication to the profession.
