Representative Client Work

  • Policy Advisor to the Provincial Government on public policy issues including drafting of extensive amendments to the School Act, the establishment of public school teaching as a self-governing profession, and the drafting of the Teaching Profession Act
  • Counsel to the Royal Commission on Workers’ Compensation in BC 1997-1999. Report dated January 20, 1999
  • General advisor to lawyers of Harper Grey LLP on various issues involving the Workers’ Compensation Act including immunity from suit for doctors who are designated as workers and employees of their management companies. Supreme Court of Canada - Kovach v. Singh 2000 I.S.C.V. 55
  • Representing a dependent widow in Charter challenge to a section of the Workers’ Compensation Act. The Supreme Court of B.C. decreed the section to be of no force and effect as infringing Section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.   • Acting as counsel for the accused in Regina v. Pontes where the Supreme Court of Canada upheld all the lower court decisions that a section of the Motor Vehicle Act of BC contravened the Charter.
  • Acting for the appellant doctor in the BC Court of Appeal allowing the doctor’s appeal from a Supreme Court decision and overturning the decision of the College of Physicians and Surgeons denying the doctor renewal of his licence. Auchong v. College of Physicians and Surgeons
  • Frequent advisor and counsel to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia on coverage and bad faith insurance issues on automobile claims
  • Representing Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in the BC Court of Appeal reversing trial judge’s decision setting aside a release signed by an injured Plaintiff. Gindis v. Brisbourne
  • Representing Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in which damages awarded by the trial judge reduced by $1,000,000.00. Cotton v. West

Background

Born in Alert Bay, British Columbia. Terry attended high school in Point Grey, graduating in 1956 from Lord Byng High School. Terry practiced law with Rankin & Company from 1964 to 1980, with Robertson & Peck from 1980 to 1990, and has been with Harper Grey LLP since 1990.

Terry married Sharon in 1966 and is father to Jason and Krista. Krista is also a lawyer and practices aboriginal law in Victoria, BC. He married Janice in 1983 and lives in West Vancouver with her and their four children.
