It is not unusual for unhappy consumers or customers to make their dissatisfaction known to third parties. However, when someone expresses that dissatisfaction in a review, rating or online post, s/he may incur legal liability for publishing defamatory statements.
Dan Reid was asked to write about developments in defamation law for the Canadian Privacy Law Review published by Lexis Nexis. His article appears in the March 2011 issue.
