Berta Lopera

Berta brings deep legal knowledge, empathy, and creativity to help clients develop thoughtful estate and personal planning solutions tailored to their needs. She is known for her practical, effective, and diligent approach to estates and probate matters.
Berta joined Harper Grey’s Business Law Group in 2026, with a practice focused on Wills & Estates. She provides trusted, practical, and client-focused advice on estate planning, probate, and personal planning matters.
Berta has more than 20 years of experience practising law in Canada, with wills and estates consistently forming a central focus of her practice. Her experience in this area has been comprehensive and integrated, and includes estate planning and wealth preservation, encompassing wills, business succession planning, estate freezes, corporate reorganizations, and trusts. She also has experience assisting with estate-related litigation, which informs her planning and drafting approach by helping anticipate and mitigate potential challenges.
She advises clients in personal and incapacity planning through powers of attorney and representation agreements.
Berta is known for her ability to connect with clients and guide them through complex and often sensitive decisions. She explains legal concepts clearly and in plain language to empower clients to make informed decisions. She works collaboratively with clients and their advisors to develop thoughtful, practical, and comprehensive solutions.
Service and community involvement have been an important part of Berta’s life since an early age. In Canada, she has served as a member of boards of directors of not-for-profit organizations, volunteered at a legal clinic for seniors, and served as the executive director of a not-for-profit organization focused on helping seniors. She raised funds and developed a microcredit program for helping vulnerable and indigenous people in Colombia.
Berta is passionate about nature, road trips, lifelong learning, travelling, and helping others.

Advising clients on comprehensive estate planning strategies to achieve efficient outcomes and minimize probate fees and taxes, including the use of trusts and multiple-will planning. Working collaboratively with insurance advisors, accountants, and tax and financial advisors to develop effective and integrated estate plans.
Assisting with probate and estate administration, including obtaining grants of probate and administration. Guiding executors and trustees through their roles, often during stressful and unfamiliar circumstances, and working with accountants to prepare and present estate accounts.
Advising clients on incapacity and personal planning, including powers of attorney, representation agreements, discretionary and non-discretionary trusts, and applications for committeeship where required.
Assisting clients with corporate reorganizations and business succession planning to facilitate the transfer of wealth while supporting the continuity of business and family enterprises.
Advising on the variation and dissolution of trusts, both by agreement and through court applications.
Working with estate litigators to develop litigation and dispute resolution strategies related to estate and trust matters.
Serving abroad as in-house counsel for international companies in the aviation and mining industries.
