New Statutory Holiday on September 30th for BC

On March 9, 2023, the BC government passed legislation to make September 30th a statutory holiday. This makes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation a provincial holiday in BC. Previously it was only a statutory holiday for federally regulated employees in BC, and some provincially regulated employers in BC chose to recognize it.
This holiday is now recognized in the Employment Standards Act in BC. Eligible employees will receive a day off with pay. For those employees who are required to work on the holiday, they will receive time-and-a-half and an alternate day off.
To be eligible for statutory holiday pay, employees need to have been employed or at least 30 calendar days and have worked or earned wages on 15 of the 30 days before the holiday.
